FIU’s Applied Research Center Kicks Off AI Partnership with Broward College

Miami, July 7th, 2022

Florida International University’s Applied Research Center and Broward College have established a partnership to develop the next generation of Artificial Intelligence professionals. The main goal of the program is to encourage minority students to pursue higher education degrees in the areas of computer science and computer engineering. This new program is funded by the US Department of Education with the intention of engaging STEM students in artificial intelligence, machine learning, data science and cybersecurity education and research. The students will start their college career at Broward College and transition to FIU to complete their STEM degrees. The inaugural cohort started a yearlong training program at FIU’s Applied Research Center that includes educational and hands-on research training.

“We are very excited about this partnership with Broward College” said Dr. Lagos (Director of Research at FIU-ARC and Associate Professor in FIU’s School of Construction Management). “We are looking forward to providing educational and research opportunities to Broward College students as part of this new partnership and continue to work with our partners at Broward to identify future opportunities”.

“We are excited for this partnership with FIU involving our BC students in collaborative creative undergraduate research” said Dr. Swaid (Dean of IT and Engineering STEM – IT/Engineering Pathway Broward College). “We believe engaging students early in undergraduate research will improve their academic achievement and educational attainment and will create a transformational learning experience”.

Dr. Upadhyay (Principal Scientist (AI & Cyber) & Associate Professor (Electrical & Computer Engineering) added “Broward College partnership will provide students an opportunity to learn fundamentals of Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning and Cybersecurity with hands on research experience. Students will receive micro credentialing badges in the area of Artificial Intelligence and Data Interpretation.”

The agreement also includes an articulation component to facilitate the transition of Broward students to FIU’s computer science and computer engineering programs.
