Dr. Mark Stephens is a research scientist with the Applied Research Center at Florida International University working on projects in the field of marine geochemistry. He performs research utilizing naturally occurring radioactive isotopes in the marine environment as tracers for processes such as ocean circulation, mixing, and sedimentation. Dr. Stephens received his Ph.D. from the University of Miami where his dissertation involved aspects of the marine carbon cycle including the paleoceanographic record of calcium carbonate and remineralization rates of organic carbon at the Equatorial Pacific seafloor. He has participated in over 35 international scientific expeditions, including research cruises in the tropical and subtropical oceans, as well as on ice breakers and at ice camps in the Arctic.
